The farewell press tour by The Young and the Restless’ Eric Braeden. Can Y&R survive without Braeden and his character Victor Newman? Does Braeden have the name recognition All My Children’s Susan Lucci has or does your average TV viewer just know he’s Victor Newman? If he’s gone for good who will fill Victor’s shoes? Is it Adam or are there other characters that can fill the void? Adam stole ashes to give to Sharon, but the story is full of holes. Colleen’s memorial was an emotional time, but who stood out and who shouldn’t have been involved? The fight for Forrester is heating up and the Logan women are being divided by Bill Spencer. The Forresters sell the beach house, but its sale price is nowhere near enough to pay off the loan. Steffy has an accident. As the World Turns’ Janet wants to raise Liberty’s child, but does Jack? Could DAYS have an “economy” super couple by bringing back Judi Evans and reuniting Adrienne and Wally Kurth’s Justin? With reality television becoming more and more popular, as production of scripted fare dries up, it's good these day to be a jack of all genres. That's exactly who Jonathan Reiner is. The veteran reality show producer (Starting Over, Big Brother), who got his start as an intern at Theater Week magazine, which led to him meeting the legendary Soap Opera Weekly editrix Mimi Torchin, and a career covering soaps, drops by Daytime Confidential to chat with Luke and Jamey about the differences and similarities between soaps and reality shows.
Reiner reflects on what it was like to work on daytime's first and only reality soap, Starting Over, co-created by the late Mary -Ellis Bunim, and offers a fresh perspective on why network television dramas seem to be struggling so much. He also ponders the question, why didn't Procter and Gamble seek out producers with reality television experience before embarking on their risky production model shift for the now-cancelled sudser Guiding Light? It's an interview you won't soon forget. |

Susan Lucci is staying with All My Children. Thorsten Kaye is leaving AMC. Beth Ehlers and Brianne Moncrieff are out as Taylor and Colby. Chrishell Stause is going on recurring. BethAnn Bonner joins All My Children. Luke suggests a role that he thinks Beth Ehlers would be good in. James Franco joins General Hospital for a limited run. What does this mean for General Hospital and for the soap opera genre in general? Greg Vaughan is out at General Hospital as Jonathan Jackson returns to the role of Lucky Spencer. What will Jackson’s return mean for the character of Lucky as a cop and could the show rewrite Jake’s paternity? Could Thorsten Kaye be headed for One Life to Live? On today’s CBS and Days of Our Lives episode of Daytime Confidential Luke, Jamey, Jillian, Mike and Mel discuss the latest in As the World Turns, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless storylines and news, including:
Austin Peck clarifies his As the World Turns demise. Melodie is loving the abortion storyline and how well they are fleshing it out. Might Rosanna and Craig sleeping together mean that Carly could be repaired with Holden? Luke, Mike and Mel are glad that Alexandra Chando is back as Maddie Coleman. Mike has a gripe about ATWT’s portrayal of people from Kentucky and Nebraska and wonders where Dusty is. The Bold and the Beautiful snapped up General Hospital’s Sarah Brown. Brown’s new character Sandy Sommers will be mixing it up with Nick, Bridgett and Whip. Bill Spencer takes over Forrester Creations. Is Brad kicking Maria’s butt in the corporate storyline department? The Steffy, Owen and Jackie triangle is heating up. Crystal Chappell returns to Days of Our Lives as Carly Manning by stabbing Lawrence. Jamey shares a rumor about who Carly might be paired with in the future, which elicits groans from everyone on the podcast. James Scott and Arianne Zucker were on fire this past week as EJ and Nicole. The Young and the Restless has written Victor into a corner and Eric Braeden out. The Jack and Victor feud has claimed a life, can they revert back to their old rivalry without trivializing Colleen’s death? Now that an Abbott has died, shouldn’t a Newman die? Who are Y&R’s next Victor and Jack? Is Adam Y&R’s future or are Billy, Deacon, Daniel and Kevin? |
